Gaming notes.

The second installment in an occasional series, in which I ask my pal and fellow Hoover’s editor Chris Huston for his informed view on top stories from the world of video gaming. These two items come from the estimable Good Morning Silicon Valley blog. First up, an item on the new “Manhunt 2″ gorefest:

Yeah, it’s like “Guernica,” only with more splatter (Note: No pictures, so this is safe for work, but even the short quotes are stomach-turning.)

Chris’s take:

What an abhorrent piece of “art”. I’ll be one of the first to defend [Rockstar Games'] Grand Theft Auto series, but this sounds like a deplorably conceived game. One of the attractions of games is the opportunity to do things — whether possible or impossible — one might never get the chance to do: drive a Murcielago or a Saleen Twin Turbo around the Nurburgring track; ride a winged unicorn casting spells of fire and frost to free some mythical land from the tyranny of a great, dark evil. Who on earth would go, “Ooh, I can’t wait to [I can't even repeat the things they say you can do in this game] when Manhunt 2 comes out!”

Second, an item about the Sony chief’s take on the fortunes of the PlayStation 3 console:

Sony’s Stringer: Don’t worry about loss-per-unit — we’ll make it up in volume

Chris’s take:

It’s an easy mistake to think the big games (and they will come) will solve the [Sony] PS3’s woes. I really think their online community will cripple them for as long as they don’t compete there with Microsoft and Nintendo. Their console store is clunkier and more frustrating than Microsoft’s and a connected Sony worldwide gaming community is non-existent, while it’s booming on the [Microsoft] Xbox. Finally, there are the reported design challenges that the other two consoles don’t face. One could make the PS2 do more than it seemed capable of, while the PS3 intimidates and bogs down developers.

Chris has never steered me wrong so far. It will be interesting to see how Sony responds to the problems the PS3 has had in penetrating the gaming market.
