Whither the newspaper industry?
Like a number of other Hoover’s editors, I have my journalistic roots in the world of print journalism. I edited my high school’s newspaper for two years, interned for a summer at my hometown paper, and then wrote for student magazines in college. Plus I still read lots of newspapers — print and online — every day. So at a personal level it pains me to see this:
The trend continues, and except for a few big titles that sell well across many geographic markets — The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, USA Today — there’s no end in sight.
Last week I asked a friend of mine — a successful and long-tenured newspaperman — where he thought his own paper and the local-paper industry would be in 10 or 20 years. He’s whip-smart and outspoken about nearly everything, but in this case he wouldn’t venture a guess.
