Boy wizard = boffo box office.

Well, right on cue, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix surpassed its prequels in the first five days of its release. Details:

  • The picture grossed nearly $45 million in the US on its opening day (last Wednesday), beating the record set by Spider-Man 2 for the best box office performance ever on a Wednesday.
  • Maybe a weekend letdown? No. Friday through Sunday: $77+ million in the US.
  • Total gross receipts in the U.S. from last Wednesday through yesterday: about $140 million, which broke the record for a five-day non-holiday opening.
  • The movie did even more business outside the US, to the tune of $190 million, for a worldwide five-day total of $330 million. As I write this, IMDB hasn’t yet logged Order of the Phoenix on its all-time worldwide box office list, but when it does the picture should stand alongside movies like Over the Hedge and the first Fantastic Four.

Not bad for a movie that’s been out less than a week, I’d say. Warners must be very proud.
