A relevant newspaper: The New Orleans Times-Picayune

This morning I heard an interesting story on NPR’s Weekend Edition* about a newspaper that has stayed relevant: the Times-Picayune of New Orleans. After Katrina hit, the Times-Picayune kept publishing continuously online, and was back in print within four days. In some cases, it was the only source of news for New Orleanians stranded without phone or mail service, and the paper has become even more relevant to its audience by focusing relentlessly on local news.

This is a useful reminder that newspapers can have a useful role to play, even if the newspaper industry as a whole seems to be going down the tubes.

The Times Picayune has been a lifeline for the people that care about New Orleans. It has also shown me how lacking the national press is. They have missed story after story and as a result the future of my home is at risk because Americans are underinformed about the real situation of “Katrina” and the Gulf South. The people I meet on the internet get their news from political blogs with agendas. The sad fact is they don’t want to listen to people that lived it. Their minds are made up. I really worry about the future of this country.
