Sine qua non.

Without it . . . you have nothing. Maybe it’s your customer base. Maybe it’s your technology. Maybe it’s your good name in the market, or your reputation as an outstanding employer. Just like humans need both oxygen and water to survive, it might even be more than one thing that your business — or your personal career — just can’t live without.

It’s easy, in the day-to-day grind of business, to lose track of what’s most important. We get hung up in small details, or we chase our own tails with bureaucracy. Sometimes we focus on the window-dressing instead of the stock-in-trade. But we can only go so far down that path before the realities of business remind us — brutally, if necessary — what’s really important.

So today, sit back for two minutes and consider whether the sine qua non of your business is getting the attention it deserves.

What’s the sine qua non in your business?

Are you acting like it?
